Shoppers Drug Mart Gift Card Scam: A Cautionary Tale

I recently encountered a gift card scam after receiving a generous gift card from a friend, purchased at Shoppers Drug Mart for the Simmons department store. When I attempted to use the card, Simmons informed me it had not been activated at Shoppers.

After pressing for more details, the employee claimed the card had been activated but had no money on it, offering no explanation. They advised me to return to Shoppers Drug Mart to resolve the issue, as they could not assist further.

At the Shoppers Drug Mart location in Square One, Mississauga, both the manager and an employee admitted that inactivated or faulty gift cards leaving their store is a common issue. However, they claimed there was nothing they could do in-store and directed me to contact Shoppers Drug Mart’s customer support. One employee even shared that this had happened to them, and as a result, they no longer buy or use gift cards, despite being an employee.

For clarity, while our conversation was with the staff at the Square One Mississauga location, the Shoppers Drug Mart that sold the faulty gift card is the 761 King St. Toronto location.

When I contacted customer support, which was only available online for this issue, Shoppers Drug Mart customer service had a specific support option for gift card activation problems, suggesting this is a widespread issue. I submitted all the required information and, after a few days, received this response:

“We have had the opportunity to investigate this with our gift card partner, Blackhawk Network. Our partner confirmed that they have completed the investigation and are unable to review the issue further. We have confirmed the gift card was properly activated successfully in our system. Simmons will be able to access the details of the card and any purchase history. For privacy reasons, Simmons is unable to provide us with any information on the card. We kindly request you to contact Simmons for further assistance.”

This response essentially shifted the blame back to Simmons, who had already confirmed that the gift card had never been activated.

A Widespread Problem or a Gift Card Scam?

A quick online search reveals that many others have faced similar issues with Shoppers Drug Mart gift cards. When combined with the store employees’ acknowledgement that inactivated gift cards are a frequent problem, it’s hard not to suspect systemic negligence or worse—a potential gift card scam.

Final Thoughts: Avoid the Hassle

The lack of accountability from both Shoppers Drug Mart and their gift card partner, Blackhawk Network, is deeply troubling. If you’re considering purchasing a gift card from Shoppers Drug Mart, I strongly urge you to reconsider.

In the future, consider giving cash instead of risking money on a gift card. It’s safer, more reliable, and ensures your recipient won’t be left empty-handed. Don’t fall victim to this Shoppers Drug Mart Gift Card Scam.
